Co-product allocation under EN 15804:A2

Many production processes yield more than one product, especially chemical production processes. An oil refinery turns crude oil into petrol, diesel and kerosene in a single step. The European Commission has published her first CPR working plan for 2026-2029 on 16th December 2025. A very relevant document for product manufacturers, but also for raw material manufacturers. 5 year validity and using EPD in tendering don't go hand in hand, a valuable lesson from 10 years’ experience

We experience a constant struggle to keep a level playing field on the one hand and not putting a significant burden on industry to constantly update their LCA/EPD datasets. What is the current status? An EPD is 5 valid and most, if not all, databases follow that period, also the Dutch NMD. That means once calculated and verified I can use the result for 5 years. When during this period something changes in the LCA rules (PCR) or background dataset (for instance the ecoinvent version) my calculation would be outdated, but still valid.

New Construction Product Regulation (CPR) requirements regarding environmental sustainability.

The process of integrating new requirements regarding environmental sustainability into The Construction Product Regulation (CPR) has begun. The two product groups 'precast concrete products' and 'structural metallic products' are the forerunners, with other product groups of the CPR following*. Environmental sustainability will be integrated into the requirements of the CPR where an EPD according to EN 15804:A2 will be required in order to determine the essential characteristics to obtain CE mark.
